Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 — Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
First, your driver-guide meets you at Kigali (airport or hotel) and briefs you on the 3-day trip. Then, enjoy a short Kigali city tour; for example, visit Kimironko Market for souvenirs and fresh fruit, and pause at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterwards, depart southbound, passing landmarks such as the Nyanza King’s Palace, Butare Museum, and the Huye and Murambi genocide sites. Finally, arrive at Nyungwe, check into your lodge, relax, and prepare for an active Day 2. Dinner and overnight at your selected lodge.
Day 2 — Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walk
Early morning, fuel up with breakfast. Then, transfer to the park headquarters (Uwinka/Cyamudongo) for the mandatory briefing. Subsequently, groups of six—with armed rangers—begin chimpanzee trekking. Depending on where they are feeding, tracking lasts about 30 minutes to 4 hours; however, you will spend 1 hour watching the chimpanzees once they are found. Meanwhile, expect to see diverse plant life, birds and other wildlife along the trail. After receiving your chimp trekking certificate and lunch at the lodge, return to the park for the canopy walk. The suspended bridge provides sweeping aerial views and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Later, head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 — Return to Kigali & City Tour
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Kigali. On the way, you may revisit any missed stops from Day 1. Then, enjoy a final stroll through Kimironko Market or another short visit to the Genocide Memorial. Finally, your driver will drop you at Kigali airport or your preferred location, marking the end of the 3-day Nyungwe experience.
