Gorilla Trekking: Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas
Gorilla trekking is one of the planet’s rarest and most moving wildlife experiences. Treks range from gentle walks to multi-hour hikes through montane forest; each visit includes a park briefing, a guided walk and up to one magical hour with a habituated gorilla family. Permits are limited and groups are small to protect the apes and maximize the quality of the encounter – book well in advance.
Chimpanzee Safaris & Ancient Rainforests
Chimp tracking is playful, active and unpredictable – a true jungle adventure. Top sites like Kibale and Nyungwe offer high sighting success and spectacular forest scenery. Typical chimp treks last 2–6 hours and include up to one hour observing natural chimp behaviour: grooming, playing and social displays. For panoramic canopy views, many parks offer canopy walkways that double as prime birding platforms.
Classic Safaris & The Great Migration (Big Five)
Sweep across the Mara, Serengeti and other iconic reserves for classic game-drive drama – lion prides, elephant herds, leopards, buffalo and (occasionally) rhino. Time your safari for June–October to increase the chances of witnessing the Great Migration’s river crossings and immense herds, but remember the Mara and Serengeti offer rich resident wildlife year-round. Private/longer game drives are available for photographers and those wanting more time at key sightings.
Volcano Hikes & Active Adventures
For the adventurous, volcano hikes add unforgettable thrills: climb to the rim of Nyiragongo’s lava lake, trek Mount Bisoke to its crater lake, or explore Mgahinga and the Virungas. These hikes pair perfectly with gorilla trekking to create high-adrenaline, taste-of-the-wild itineraries. Expect varied terrain and spectacular views – good fitness and proper gear are recommended.
Birding, Wetlands & River Safaris
East Africa’s wetlands and river systems are a birder’s paradise – find species from shoebills and carmine bee-eaters to numerous raptors and waterbirds. Add boat safaris on lakes and rivers for a striking contrast to land-based game drives and for encounters with aquatic species and marsh specialists.
Island & Marine Escapes – Zanzibar, Pemba & Coral Islets
Combine primate treks and savannah drives with restorative island days. Zanzibar and nearby isles offer white sand beaches, coral snorkeling, spice tours and unique wildlife such as the Zanzibar red colobus in Jozani Forest. These coastal extensions make for perfect honeymoon, family or relaxing post-safari add-ons.
Cultural Encounters & Community Tourism
Meaningful cultural experiences – visits to Maasai settlements, Batwa community projects, and village markets deepen your trip and support local livelihoods. We recommend respectful, locally-run visits where proceeds directly benefit communities and conservation.
Responsible Tourism & Conservation
Ethical primate and wildlife tourism keeps animals wild and communities thriving. Travel with licensed guides, follow park rules, respect safe distances and health protocols (masks or hygiene measures where required), and support operators that reinvest in anti-poaching and community projects. Small changes by visitors can have a huge conservation impact.
